DISNEY’S PIXAR SOUL IN-DEPTH RECAP + DISCUSSION!

On Christmas of 2020, Pixar released its new movie “Soul,” which honestly was a power move. Being someone who basically grew up on Disney/Pixar, I was so hype and my brother and I watched it on Christmas morning.

The intro starts, you see the Disney castle but you don’t really hear the Disney theme song because it’s being played by these middle school band students. It honestly takes me right back to my middle school orchestra days. It reminded me of the last time I went to a middle school band concert and everything was kind of out of tune.

The movie itself starts and you see our main character Joe, an African American male, trying his hardest to direct this middle school band. You can tell he’s not really having a good time. I feel like the vibe is that “I have all this potential and it’s being wasted on these students who don’t really care about music, except maybe one student.” However, he must be kind of good at his job because the principal offers him this long term position with pension and everything. He doesn’t seem super excited about it so that’s how you can tell he’s not really into that path for himself. And then when he tells his mom she’s all excited because she’s that relatable mother figure who just wants him to have a stable job and be able to support himself. But Joe is…
