The Queen’s Gambit Ep 1 (Openings) Recap + Discussion

So I started watching The Queen’s Gambit yesterday and was immediately sucked in. I like how there is only 1 season with 7 episodes because it’ll be a quick watch. I’m writing this without having seen any of the other episodes yet and I’ll write one after watching each ep!

We start off by seeing older Beth (in her 20s maybe?) in a really fancy hotel room in Paris in 1967. It seems she is late for something. We soon find out it’s for a chess match. From what I garner, she is somewhat of a famous player at this point because reporters are taking pictures of her as she enters.

Before the game starts, we get a full dive into Beth’s backstory. I love when shows do this (for ex, “Lost” also likes to flashback). We see young Beth at age 9 standing in front of a devastating car crash scene and taken to an orphanage. The first thing I notice is that Beth is definitely not a happy go-lucky character. She is very sullen and quiet. Also she has a very interesting hair style (orange hair cut super short with straight bangs). The orphanage has 21 girls and seems to be a decent place to grow up — in the sense that it provides the children with education and the people who run the place are pretty nice.
