*Spoiler warning*

Episode 3 was a juicy one!! We start with more young Beth flashbacks, like back to the time when her biological mother was still alive. The two are sitting by a lake. It’s almost horror movie-esque because her mom gets in the water, waves goodbye, and then you see Beth panicking because she thinks her mom drowned. However, she pops up on a floating deck and Beth is all relieved. Kind of strange — again, I am not a fan of her biological mom. She seems sus.

Flash forward to current times. Beth and Alma are in a bustling Cincinnati hotel for the chess tournament. Beth goes to explore the grounds and we meet Benny for the first time, who is played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster. He’s surrounded by people and is kind of just gloating about chess strategy. Apparently he’s too cool to play at the tournament because playing at too many opens could only hurt his ranking. So you already know he’s some hot shot and he knows it.

Anyways, Beth wins the tournament and agrees to let Alma be her agent at a 15% commission. They’ve developed a cute mother-daughter relationship at this point. Alma seems to be living for all the travel and hotel snacks. The two even have a spa day and are making good money!
