*Spoiler warning!*
This episode was a little slow for me. At least out of the 5 I’ve watched so far, this one held my attention the least, I think because there was more character development set up and just one-on-one talking scenes.
We did start off with a creepy flashback though, to Beth’s biological mother advising her to be independent and learning how to take care of herself. I’m still curious whether we’re going to learn more about the car accident before the show ends!
In present times, Beth has come home from the Mexico tournament. She’s all by herself and clearly very lonely now that Alma is not in the picture. But Beltik happens to call and she invites him over! They develop a more intimate relationship, with Beltik teaching Beth all he knows about chess. I thought he was so intimidating the first time she competed against him, but in this episode he was kind of a mush. Since Beltik is just visiting Kentucky, Beth invites him to stay with her (probably because she wants a companion). We see that Beltik has a major crush on Beth and it’s kind of cute — he even goes into the bathroom to give himself a pep talk. Anyways, they end up hooking up but Beltik is way more into her than she is into him. He even reveals that he got his teeth fixed because of her. However, she’s pretty aloof and nonchalant…
